A suppressor, sound suppressor, sound moderator, or silencer, is a device attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm which reduces the sound and usually also the amount of muzzle flash generated by firing the weapon. In many cases, a firearm can be suppressed so well, that the sound of the weapon cycling generates more sound than the discharged bullet.
A suppressor is usually a metal cylinder with internal mechanisms to reduce the sound of firing by slowing discharging the escaping propellant gas and sometimes by reducing the velocity of the bullet.
There is another type, the “integral” suppressor, which consists of expansion chambers surrounding the barrel. The barrel is pierced with openings or “ports” which bleed off gases into the chambers. This type of suppressor is part of the firearm, and maintenance of the suppressor requires that the firearm be at least partially disassembled.
